Properly Installing A Push Button Latch Part II

In our last post, we talked about the nuisance of having to pull your keys out when you want to open the fuel cap. For part II, we’ll finish the step-by-step instructions on how to install a push button latch for your motorcycle gas cap.

The push button kit comes with two different fuel hinge attachments – one for motorcycles made from 1992 – 2007 and a second for bikes that are 2008 or newer. Take the fuel door and fit it back into place, situate the hinge attachment over it and align the holes for the screws. Holding the fuel door and hinge attachment in place, thread both screws by hand before tightening either with the screwdriver. The reason for the new hinge attachment is that the latch mechanism is now spring-loaded, which will make it easier to get into there. Be careful of customizing your gas tank, some riders catch the bug and end up with motorcycle decals all over their gas tanks. Once you’re ready, go ahead and install the push button mechanism – put the button in sideways at first, turn it, then push it all the way in.

Next, screw the nut all the way back on. Remember not to tighten the nut too much; this can be difficult to judge considering the size of the wrench.

Next, remove your rag and replace it with your fuel cap – be sure nothing falls into the tank. Now it’s time to test your work! Close the fuel door – there will likely be more resistance against closing it now that the mechanism is spring-loaded – and check to make sure your button functions correctly. One thing that drives a lot of motorcyclists crazy is the obligation to pull your keys out when you want to open your fuel cap. Has this happened to you? Keep reading to check out a way to speed-up the process. Below are step-by-step instructions to help you install a push button latch for your motorcycle gas cap.

One of the Kuryakyn parts that has recently gained popularity is the new push button fuel latch, with this fuel latch you don’t have to use your key – just push the button and the fuel door will pop open.

It’s a pretty simple install, however, you are going to need a couple tools: a 7/8^th wrench and a standard flathead screwdriver. Before you start the installation make sure to read over the instructions – this way you will know what’s going on and the steps below will help to guide you.

To give yourself a little more room to work down by the fuel door, start by removing the fuel cap. Just to make sure you don’t have anything fall in your motorcycle gas tank, you will want to stick a rag in the top. The next step is to take your 7/8^th wrench and find the nut on the bottom of the locking mechanism. Just loosen and remove the nut, take the lock, turn it sideways, push the button in that is keeping it in place and pull it out gently. These latches fit snugly, so try to carefully work the lock out by pulling it up and around.

The next step you want to do is to remove the fuel door. Make sure to loosen both screws, while holding the fuel door in place, before removing either of the screws. Be careful not to drop either of the screws, as you made need them again one day. Once you have taken out both screws, pull out the stock hinge attachment and remove the fuel door. Take the stock parts and keep them out of the way in case you need them again at a later date. Many riders seek to increase their fuel economy by using a motorcycle fuel treatment, keeping the stock motorcycle parts can ensure your freedom to change your fuel door in the future in the event that your riding needs change. Like many of our fellow riders, customizing our bikes is half the fun. It can, however, seem overwhelming for many who are new to do-it-yourself motorcycle customization. From fully customizing your ride or looking to add a little more power to performing an oil change safety-enhancing features cannot be ignored. Many riders can get caught up trying to maximize their power, exhaust, or other features, but without the proper safety precautions in mind, the results can be trouble. Be sure not to be one of them!

One simple way to make sure you are safe on the road is by having the right motorcycle light bulbs. Being seen on the road is one of the most important features, which is why going beyond the standard motorcycle headlight could be a life saving upgrade. Many riders believe the bulbs that come with their bike are fine, which in many situations can be the case, but in some situations these stock bulbs don’t provide the most light available, even if they fit the wattage requirements. Recent technology advancements have made it easier to buy motorcycle lights that increase the light output without increasing the wattage required.

Though customization of light bulbs isn’t always the most exciting feature to advance on your ride, it can be the difference between being seen on the road, and not. Be sure to compare the different types of light bulbs to find the best option for your ride.
